The voice crying in the wilderness
The prophet who prepared the way, baptized Jesus in the Jordan and pointed to Him as “the Lamb of God.” Killed by Herod Antipas.
The voice in the wilderness
A relative of Jesus, he lived in the wilderness, dressed in camel’s hair. He preached repentance and baptized in the Jordan, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy about “a voice of one calling.”
Becoming less so that He may grow
He points to Jesus as “the Lamb of God” and sums up his mission: “He must increase; I must decrease.” Imprisoned for confronting Herod, he is beheaded.
