Context

The book of Proverbs gathers sayings of wisdom, many linked to King Solomon. It begins like a father talking with his son, eye to eye. Proverbs are short sayings to memorize and remember at the right moment. They aren’t magic promises; they’re like maps that show the safest path. Right in the first lesson we see who teaches a child first: father and mother.

What the Bible teaches

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction.” Listening isn’t just hearing with your ears. It means stopping what you’re doing, looking at the person speaking and thinking about what was said. Some people hear, answer “okay” and don’t listen at all! Solomon speaks of the father and the mother together: both have something to teach.

Then comes a beautiful picture: their teaching will be a garland of grace on your head and a pendant around your neck. Back then, crowns and necklaces showed honor. Whoever learns to listen becomes more beautiful on the inside, and people notice. Think of a friend who pays attention when you talk: you want to be near them, don’t you? Listening well is an ornament no one can buy at a store.

Listening takes humility, which means admitting: I don’t know everything yet. Your parents have traveled more road than you and have seen potholes you haven’t seen yet. But they make mistakes too, and Proverbs doesn’t say parents are perfect. So children can ask questions respectfully, and parents can listen to their children too. Wisdom is a two-way conversation.

This week, each child asks an older family member for advice about something real in their life and shares at dinner what they learned.

Prayer

God, give me attentive ears. When my dad, my mom or whoever cares for me teaches me, help me stop and really listen. And teach the adults in my home to listen to me too. May your wisdom be a crown on my life. Amen.
