A grandson in Naomi's lap

A teaching for grandparents · Ruth 4:13–17

13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And when he had relations with her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel. 15He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.” 16And Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and became a nurse to him. 17The neighbor women said, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Context

Naomi lost her husband and both sons in Moab and returned to Bethlehem asking to be called Mara, which means bitter (Ruth 1:20). She came back with only her Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth. Boaz, a relative of the family, marries Ruth as kinsman-redeemer, to preserve the family's name and land. At the end of the book, the focus is not on the couple but on the grandmother: Naomi takes into her lap the boy Obed, grandfather of the future King David.

What the Bible teaches

The book that began with three funerals ends with a baby in a grandmother's lap. The neighbor women tell Naomi that the boy “will renew your life.” The bitterness was not undone by a speech, but by a new presence, small and concrete. God did not erase Naomi's losses; He placed her once again inside a story that was still going on.

The text says Naomi “became a nurse to him,” that is, the one who cared for the boy. She did not just watch: she took part in raising him. Many grandparents do this every day, taking kids to school, giving baths, watching the children while the parents work. The Bible does not treat this as a lesser task. Obed is a link in the line of David and, later, of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).

There is also a lesson about welcome. The women say that Ruth, the foreign daughter-in-law, is better to Naomi than seven sons. Grandparents who receive their daughters-in-law and sons-in-law well, with their differences of background, of custom and even of faith, make room for blessings that would not come any other way.

In practice

Tell a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law or someone on the other side of the family, in so many words, one thing you are grateful for in them.

To talk about

When in our family did a child, a new person or a fresh start bring life after a loss?

Prayer

God of Naomi, You see the losses I carry and the bitterness that has not yet healed. Thank You for not abandoning my story. Place in my lap the people I should love and care for, and give me joy in serving the new generations of my family. Amen.
