Even when old and gray
A teaching for grandparents · Psalms 71:17–18
17O God, You have taught me from my youth, and to this day I proclaim Your marvelous deeds. 18Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, until I proclaim Your power to the next generation, Your might to all who are to come.
Context
Psalm 71 is the prayer of an older person. He looks back and sees God's faithfulness since his youth, but he also faces enemies and the fear of being cast aside in his weakness (v. 9). He does not ask only for protection: he asks for time. He wants to live long enough to tell the next generations what God has done. It is one of the few biblical texts written from within old age itself.
What the Bible teaches
The psalmist brings together two things that seem opposite: frailty and mission. He knows he is old and asks, “do not forsake me.” At the same time, he feels he still has a task: to proclaim God's power “to the next generation.” Old age, here, is not a retirement from faith. It is the season when memory becomes an inheritance.
Notice what he wants to tell: God's works, not his own achievements. Grandchildren do not need perfect grandparents; they need honest witnesses. Telling how God sustained the family through an illness, a job loss, a move to another city, even admitting the fears and the mistakes, teaches more than a sermon. A faith that has come through crises speaks with a different authority.
These stories are lost when no one records them. Many families find out too late that they do not know how the grandparents met, why they came from where they came, what led them to believe. Telling is an act of love and also of worship. And someone who never received a story of faith from their own family may be exactly the one who starts the first.

Lord, You have taught me from my youth. Now that the years go by, do not forsake me. Give me memory, voice and opportunity to tell Your works to those who come after me, with truth and joy. May they know Your power, and not just my stories. Amen.
