Knit by hand
A teaching for teens · Psalms 139:13–16
13For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. 15My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.
Context
Psalm 139 is attributed to David and is one of the most personal prayers in the Bible. It begins with a realization that can either frighten or comfort: God knows everything about me, when I sit down, what I think, where I run. In the middle of the psalm, David looks back at his own beginnings and describes being formed in the womb with images of weaving, like cloth made by hand, thread by thread, with care.
What the Bible teaches
A lot of things today try to tell you who you are: grades, followers, looks, the group you fit into, what people say about you in the hallway. The problem is that all of it changes every week. David anchors identity somewhere else: “You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Before you did anything right or wrong, someone had already given you an artisan’s attention.
Notice that the psalm doesn’t say David feels wonderful. It says God’s works are marvelous and that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. That’s different from advertising-style self-esteem. You don’t have to like everything in the mirror to know you have worth. Your worth comes from the one who made you, not from how you rate yourself today.
An honest note: the same psalm ends by asking God to search the heart and show what is wrong. Being loved by God doesn’t mean being finished. This is Christian identity: I am fully known, including the parts I hide, and still I am loved. That doesn’t make you arrogant or sink you. It sets you free to grow.
In practice
Write three things you tend to say about yourself when you’re feeling low. Next to each one, write what Psalm 139 says about you, and leave the paper where you’ll see it every morning this week.

God, you know me better than I know myself, even what I hide. Thank you for forming me with care. When I measure my worth by numbers, looks or approval, remind me who made me. Search my heart and help me grow without fear. Amen.
