The Last Supper
The bread, the cup, the new commandment
On the eve of Passover, Jesus washes the disciples' feet, points out the betrayer and institutes the supper: the bread and the cup as signs of His body and blood of the new covenant. There He leaves the “new commandment”: that they love one another as He has loved them.
A Passover meal
It was Passover, the memorial of the deliverance from Egypt. Jesus gives new meaning to the bread and the cup: his body and his blood, the new covenant.
The King who washes feet
Before the meal, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet, a slave’s task, and gives the “new commandment”: love one another as I have loved you.
The traitor at the table
Judas is there and receives the bread. Jesus knows about the betrayal and serves him anyway, a love that doesn’t shut out the enemy.
