The Temptation
Forty days in the wilderness
Right after His baptism, the Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness, where He fasts forty days and is tempted with hunger, power and pride. To each attack He answers with Scripture (“It is written…”), overcoming where Adam and Israel failed.
The second Adam in the wilderness
Where Israel failed for 40 years in the wilderness and Adam fell in the garden, Jesus holds firm for 40 days. He answers each temptation by quoting Deuteronomy, Scripture as a weapon.
The three temptations
Turn stones into bread (appetite), throw himself from the temple (spectacle) and receive the kingdoms by worshiping the devil (power without the cross). Jesus refuses the shortcuts.
