Seven self-revelations
In the Gospel of John, Jesus defines himself seven times with the formula “I Am” (ego eimi), which echoes the name of God revealed to Moses (“I AM WHO I AM,” Exodus 3:14). Each image answers a deep human need.
The seven statements
1) The Bread of Life (Jn 6:35), for the hunger of the soul. 2) The Light of the World (Jn 8:12), for the darkness. 3) The Gate (Jn 10:9), for those seeking a way in. 4) The Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11), for those who feel lost. 5) The Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25), in the face of death. 6) The Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn 14:6), for those looking for God. 7) The True Vine (Jn 15:1), for those who want to bear fruit.
Why they matter
They are not loose metaphors: they are claims of divine identity. Together, they answer “Who is Jesus?” with an answer he gives himself.
