Cupbearer to the Persian king who returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the walls in 52 days, joining prayer and work in the face of opposition.
A cup, a broken heart
Nehemiah had a secure life as cupbearer to the Persian king. But the news of Jerusalem in ruins makes him weep, fast and pray for days. The great work begins with a heart broken by the pain of others.
Prayer and action hand in hand
Nehemiah prays, and then he acts: he asks for resources, organizes the people, hands out the tasks. Facing threats, “we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them” (Nehemiah 4:9). Faith isn’t passivity; it’s trusting and working.
Walls and lives rebuilt
The walls go up in 52 days, despite the mockery and the traps. But Nehemiah knows stone walls aren’t enough: together with Ezra, he also rebuilds the people’s spiritual life through the reading of the Word. Restoring the outside and the inside.
