The guarded spring
A teaching for husbands · Proverbs 5:18–21
18May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth: 19A loving doe, a graceful fawn— may her breasts satisfy you always; may you be captivated by her love forever. 20Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress, or embrace the bosom of a stranger? 21For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD examines all his paths.
Context
Proverbs 5 is a father’s advice to his son about the allure of adultery, which seems sweet at first and ends in bitterness. In vv. 15 to 17, marriage is compared to a private well that isn’t spilled out into the streets. In the chosen verses, the father doesn’t just forbid: he invites his son to rejoice in his wife and reminds him that God sees every path.
What the Bible teaches
The Bible isn’t shy about desire. The wise man tells the husband to rejoice in the wife of his youth and to be “captivated by her love forever.” Protection against unfaithfulness isn’t only running from wrong; it’s cultivating delight. Faithfulness isn’t merely the absence of betrayal, it’s the presence of joy, tenderness and attention to the body and soul of the woman you made a covenant with.
The question in v. 20 sounds almost astonished: why trade the clean spring for stolen water? Today that water comes through the phone screen, through the conversation with a coworker that starts innocently, through pornography that promises much and steals the ability to love a real person. None of it starts big. It starts with small permissions no one sees.
But v. 21 reminds us that “a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD.” It isn’t a threat; it’s an invitation to transparency. Men who live in the open, with known passwords, friends who ask questions and a wife who knows where they are, discover a freedom that secrecy never gives. If you have already fallen, there is forgiveness and a path to restoration, but that path begins with the truth.

This week, remove one access point that feeds temptation (an app, a conversation, a late-night habit) and tell a trusted Christian friend what you did.
