Gently led
A teaching for mothers · Isaiah 40:11
11He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. He gently leads the nursing ewes.
Context
Isaiah 40 opens the part of the book addressed to a people exiled in Babylon, weary and feeling forgotten by God (v. 27). The chapter begins with “Comfort, comfort My people” (v. 1). In v. 11, God is described as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms. Shepherds knew that pregnant or nursing ewes couldn’t keep up with the flock’s pace and had to be led slowly.
What the Bible teaches
Notice who gets special attention: the lambs, carried in his arms, and “the nursing ewes,” gently led. God knows that those caring for small children don’t walk at everyone else’s pace. He doesn’t demand of the nursing mother, the one who wakes up at night, the one caring for a child with a disability or illness, the same pace as someone who sleeps through the night.
Many mothers live between exhaustion and guilt: guilt for working outside the home or for not working, for losing patience, for not praying like before, for not being the mother on social media. The text doesn’t say the shepherd hurries the slow ones; it says he leads them gently. Verse 29 completes it: “He gives power to the faint.” Exhaustion is not a lack of faith. Guilt that only accuses and shows no way forward doesn’t come from God.
God’s gentleness also comes through people: a husband who takes the night shift, a grandmother, a friend, the church bringing a meal. Asking for help is humility, not failure. Single mothers especially need a support network. And if the exhaustion has turned into a sadness that won’t lift, a loss of the will to live or thoughts of hurting yourself, that isn’t spiritual weakness: it’s time to seek professional help.
In practice
Write down one thing you’ll stop demanding of yourself this week and one concrete kind of help you’ll ask someone for. Then ask.
To talk about
What is weighing most on our household routine, and how can we share that weight better?
Prayer
Lord, my Shepherd, I’m tired. Thank you that you don’t push me but gently lead me. Take from me the guilt that doesn’t come from you, give me rest and people to help me. Carry my children in your arms when my arms can’t hold on. Amen.
