When healing doesn't come quickly

A teaching for hard times · 2 Corinthians 12:7–10

7or because of these surpassingly great revelations. So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. 10That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Context

Paul writes to the Corinthians defending his ministry against critics who admired strength, eloquence and success. Instead of showing off victories, he talks about a limitation: a thorn in the flesh. We do not know what it was; many think of a chronic illness, others of persistent persecution. Paul asked God three times to take it away. The answer was not healing, but a promise.

What the Bible teaches

Paul prayed for healing, and he prayed persistently. Asking God to heal someone in the family is legitimate and biblical. But the text is honest: not every prayer for healing receives the yes we hope for. The answer to Paul was: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” God did not abandon him; He gave him His presence in the middle of the limitation.

This frees the family from two heavy burdens. The first is guilt: illness does not prove anyone's lack of faith. The second is pretending: you do not have to smile all the time to seem spiritual. Paul speaks openly about weaknesses, hardships and difficulties. A home where people can say I'm scared is healthier than a home of silent heroes.

In practice, grace often arrives through concrete means: good medical treatment, a neighbor who brings food, a brother or sister who takes turns at the hospital. Seeking medical care does not contradict faith. And whoever cares for the sick person also needs rest and someone to care for them.

In practice

Make a list of concrete tasks (meals, rides, medications, company) and ask specific people to take on one of them this week.

To talk about

What is each of us feeling about this illness, and what do we need to get through this time?

Prayer

Lord, I ask You for healing for the one I love, and I will not stop asking. But if the road is long, may Your grace be enough for me. Give wisdom to the doctors, strength to those who give care and peace to our home. Show Your power in our weakness. Amen.
