The grandparents' crown

A teaching for grandparents · Proverbs 17:6

6Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of a son is his father.
Proverbs 17:6 · BSB

Context

Proverbs gathers sayings of wisdom, many of them linked to Solomon, meant to shape character in the daily life of an Israelite household. In that culture, three or four generations usually lived close to one another, often around the same courtyard. This proverb has two halves that mirror each other: grandchildren honor their grandparents, and parents honor their children. Honor does not only flow from the top down; it circulates between the generations.

What the Bible teaches

A crown is not a paycheck: it is a public sign of dignity. When the proverb calls grandchildren “the crown of the aged,” it is saying that an older person's worth is not measured by what they still produce, but by the bonds they helped to form. In a culture that treats aging as a loss of value, Scripture turns the math around: there is honor in living long enough to see life go on.

The second half completes the first: children take pride in their parents. A chain forms in which each generation leans on the other. Grandparents who speak well of the parents in front of the grandchildren, instead of competing with them or undermining them in front of the kids, strengthen that chain. And grandchildren who hear the family's stories discover that they did not start from scratch.

Proverbs is wisdom, not a guarantee. There are grandparents without grandchildren, grandparents estranged by quarrels, grandchildren who hardly ever visit. In those cases the crown is not lost: it can be cultivated with grandchildren of the heart, godchildren, children from church and from the neighborhood. The question is not how many grandchildren you have, but what honor you can sow today.

In practice

Tell a grandchild, or a child close to you, a specific memory from when you were their age, and ask them to share one from today.

To talk about

What good does each generation of our family have to offer the other, and what has been getting in the way of that exchange?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the generations You have placed in my life. Teach me to honor those who came before and to bless those who come after. Where there is distance or hurt, open paths back to each other. May my old age be a crown, and not a burden, for my family. Amen.
