Gathering the heart of Jesus’ teaching (Matthew 5–7), it opens with the Beatitudes, which declare blessed those the world despises: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek.
A righteousness of the heart
Jesus deepens the Law: it’s not enough not to kill, you must not hate; it’s not enough not to commit adultery, you must guard your eyes. And he teaches the Lord’s Prayer and “do not worry.”
A house on the rock
It ends with the decisive image: hearing his words and putting them into practice is building on the rock; hearing and not practicing is building on the sand.
