The bread that came down from heaven
Family worship guide · theme: I am · the bread of life · ages 3–12 · 20 min
Opening
Family bakery: put a whole loaf of bread in the middle of the table, warm if possible (a baguette, sandwich bread or homemade). Everyone closes their eyes and smells it: who can describe the smell best? Then an adult breaks the bread by hand and each person hands a piece to the person next to them, but nobody eats yet. Ask: how long does hunger stay away after you eat bread? Until the next meal! Today Jesus is going to talk about a much deeper hunger.
Reading
Before reading, sum up in two sentences what happened the day before: Jesus fed more than five thousand people with a boy's five loaves and two fish (6:9–13), and the next day the crowd went after Him wanting more. An adult reads verses 32 to 40. At verse 35, everyone eats their piece of bread together, and the reader slowly repeats: I am the bread of life. A teenager can reread verse 37 as a promise for each person in the house.
32Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34“Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.” 35Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. 36But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. 37Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. 39And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Teaching
The day before, Jesus had fed a crowd with a boy's five barley loaves. Now the people cross the sea to find Him, and Jesus is frank: you are looking for Me because you ate and were filled (v. 26). They ask for another sign and bring up the manna, the bread God sent from heaven in the wilderness. For those people, bread was everyday life, and the manna was proof that God sustains His own.
Jesus' answer is astonishing: the true bread from heaven is not the manna, it is Himself. “I am the bread of life.” When God revealed His name to Moses, He said “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14), and John makes that name echo in every I am that Jesus speaks. He does not say He gives bread; He says He is the bread. He came to satisfy the hunger for forgiveness, meaning and love that nothing else can fill. And He guarantees it: whoever comes to Him will not be sent away (v. 37), and no one the Father has given Him will be lost (v. 39). It is not a promise that the table will never be short; it is the certainty that, in Him, what matters most is never missing.
Conversation
For little ones
- How many loaves did the boy give Jesus? And how many people ate?
- Jesus said: I am the bread of life. Shall we say it together, with a hand on our tummy?
For kids
- The people wanted more free bread. What did Jesus want to give them?
- What hunger can bakery bread not fix? Think of sadness, fear or loneliness. How does Jesus take care of that hunger in you?
For teens
- Lots of people followed Jesus for what they could get. What wrong reasons sometimes lead us to look for God, or to disappear from Him when we don't get what we wanted?
- What do you use to try to fill the hunger inside: likes, approval, games, grades? What changes for you if Jesus is the true bread?
For adults
- Have I been seeking Jesus for the bread He gives or for who He is? Can my children see the difference in my life?
- Verse 37 says that whoever comes to Jesus will not be sent away. Who, in our family or nearby, needs to hear that this week?
Activity
Bread with names: on a sheet of paper, draw a huge loaf of bread and write inside it (or the little ones draw) the name of each person in the house and of someone who is hungry for God or for food. If you have ready-made bread or cheese-bread dough at home, roll little balls together and bake them for a snack, sharing them the way Jesus shared.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the bread of life. Thank You that no one who comes to You is sent away. Today I bring You my hunger for [each person completes: peace, forgiveness, courage, a friend]. Teach us to seek You more than the things You give, and to share our bread with those who are hungry. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Blessing
2 Corinthians 13:14
During the week
Shared bread mission: during the week, take bread or a special snack to someone outside your home (the doorman, an elderly neighbor, a classmate who never has a snack, a person experiencing homelessness), always with an adult along. Before each meal, someone names a hunger only Jesus can satisfy, and everyone answers: Jesus is the bread of life.
