Opening
Mirror game: in pairs, one person makes faces and gestures and the other copies them, like a reflection. After a minute, ask: what does a mirror do? It shows the image of whoever is standing in front of it. Today we are going to discover whose image we are.
Reading
An adult reads verses 26 to 31 slowly. Agree on gestures with the kids: when they hear the word God, they point up; when they hear the word good, they give a thumbs-up. At the end, ask a child who can already read (or everyone together, repeating after the adult) to read verse 31 out loud.
26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” 29Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food. 30And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31And God looked upon all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Teaching
Up to verse 25, God creates with a word, and things come into being. In verse 26 the rhythm changes: it is as if God pauses to say Let Us make. Human beings are the only creatures made in the image and likeness of God. In the ancient world, kings placed statues of themselves throughout the lands they ruled, to remind everyone who was in charge there. Genesis is surprising: God's image is not a statue in a palace; it is every man and every woman, in any home. That is why no one in your family is worth less: not the baby, not the grandpa who now forgets names, not the child with a disability.
The rule in verse 28 is not a license to exploit; it means caring for the earth the way God cares for it, as his representatives. And notice verse 31: after creating people, the verdict rises from good to “very good.” Before any grade at school, paycheck or compliment, God already looked at us with joy. Our worth comes from the One who made us, not from how we perform.
Conversation
For little ones
- God made the fish, the birds and the animals. Then who did he make? Point to someone here whom God made with love.
- What did God think of everything he had made?
For kids
- A mirror shows the image of whoever is in front of it. What do you think it means to be made in God's image?
- God gave people the job of caring for the earth and the animals. What can you take care of here at home?
For teens
- If every person carries God's image, how does that change the way people talk about others in the school group chat or on social media?
- Is it hard to believe you are very good in God's eyes when you compare yourself with others? What usually weighs on you the most?
For adults
- In what areas have I been measuring my worth, or my children's, by performance instead of by the fact that we bear God's image?
- Who in our family, or near us, has been treated as if they were worth less? How can we honor that person this week?
Activity
Image box: put a small mirror (or a phone with the screen turned off) inside a box. Each person opens the box, looks at their own face and completes out loud: God made me with love, and I can take care of... The little ones draw their own face, and an adult writes underneath: made by God.
Prayer
Creator God, thank you for making the sky, the sea, the animals and every person in this home. Thank you for looking at us and saying it was very good. Today I thank you for [each person completes: a person, an animal, a place]. Teach us to take care of what is yours and to treat every person with respect. In Jesus' name, Amen.

During the week
Caretakers mission: choose something in creation for the family to care for during the week (watering a plant, feeding the pet, picking up trash on the sidewalk, saving water in the shower). At dinner, each person shares a moment in the day when they treated someone as God's image, with respect and patience.
